How to steer into saving money on your auto insurance

What is a cost-saving option if I drive less?

You don’t need to pay for mileage you don’t use. CAA MyPace® is Canada’s only pay-as-you-go auto insurance payment program for people who drive less than 12,000 kilometres a year. That’s like 300 round trips to work, 150 round trips to the grocery store, two road trips between Ottawa and Toronto, and a few more local road trips, with distance to spare.  

This innovative program allows you to pay a base rate plus your first 1,000 kilometres, then purchase coverage in 1,000 kilometre increments as you drive. You could save up to 50% compared to a traditional auto insurance policy. If you’re currently with another insurer, the savings you would get from CAA MyPace may be significant enough to warrant switching midterm. Plus, if your needs ever change, you can move to a traditional CAA Insurance policy with no fees or penalties at any time. 

How does CAA MyPace work? 

The CAA MyPace program is simple, and it only takes four easy steps to enroll and save. 

  1. Enroll in CAA MyPace and pay your base rate plus your first 1,000 kilometres.  
  2. Install the CAA MyPace device in your vehicle.  
  3. Download the CAA MyPace app to your smartphone. You can monitor your usage at any time by logging in to your CAA Account online and via the CAA MyPace mobile app.  
  4. Drive. CAA will automatically reload your next 1,000 kilometres for you. 

What should I ask my insurance agent? 

Auto insurance companies often attract new customers by offering additional perks, so make sure you take advantage of as many as possible.  

Think about things like how much you drive, what your rates are and if there are other drivers in your home before your policy review.  

Here are some things you should ask. 

  • Given the distances I currently drive, could I change my vehicle policy from daily to occasional use? 
  • Yes! If you drive less than 12,000km a year, you can think about switching to CAA MyPace, Canada's only pay-as-you-go auto insurance payment program. 
  • Is there an option for a multi-vehicle discount if my household has two or more cars? 
    Yes! When you have two or more vehicles on one CAA Auto Insurance policy, you can save 15%. 
  • What do the savings look like if I bundle my auto and home insurance policies? 
    They're great! Bundling your auto and home insurance with CAA can save 10% on auto insurance and up to 12.5% on home insurance premiums. 
  • Does being a CAA Member mean better savings? 
    Yes! While you don’t need to be a CAA Member to purchase CAA Auto Insurance, CAA Members save up to 20%2 on auto. 
  • What if I’m retired, are there any additional incentives for me? 
    Yes! Retirees save 10%3 on CAA Auto Insurance. 
  • If you have a driver at home under the age of 25, do they qualify for the CAA Head Start Discount? 
  • Maybe! If you’re a legal guardian who is a CAA Insurance policyholder in good standing in Ontario – your children or dependents living with you may qualify. Ask if your safe principal driver, under 25 qualifies for a 25%4 discount. 
  • Is there a benefit to changing my seasonal tires by a certain date? 
    Yes! You can enjoy 5%5 savings if you install winter tires before November 20th and remove them no earlier than April 15th.
