Car in the winter

Top 3 Tips to Prepare Your Car for Winter

It’s no shock that winter’s icy and slush-filled roads pose quite the threat to Ontario drivers. Although winter hasn’t yet officially arrived yet, it’s crucial to get vehicles prepared in advance. In order to help you stay safe this winter, CAA North & East Ontario (CAANEO) has put together their top three tips.

1. Change to Winter Tires

Despite their name, all-season tires lose elasticity at around 7°C, meaning drivers have less traction on icy roads. The rubber in winter tires doesn’t harden like all-season ones, offering a better grip. Switching over can also save you money; drivers get a 5% discount on CAA Auto Insurance premiums when they install four winter tires no later than Nov. 20, 2021. They must be kept on the vehicle until Apr. 15, 2022.

An easy, affordable AND contactless tire-changing service right at home? Yes, please! CAA Members in select regions within Ottawa, Sudbury and Thunder Bay can take advantage of CAA Mobile Tire Service for the winter season ahead. Appointments must be booked online, at least 72 hours in advance. Book your appointment today!

2. Test your Car Battery

It’s the easiest way to ruin anyone’s morning; after braving the cold to clean off your car, you get inside only to discover it won’t start. Getting your battery tested now can save you that headache. Fully charged automotive batteries should measure at 12.6 volts or above. When the engine is running, this measurement should be 13.7 to 14.7 volts. Fortunately, CAA’s Mobile Battery Service will come to your location to test, replace, and recycle your battery on the spot.

3. Don’t Put Off Needed Maintenance
